December Meeting

Hi all,

There won't be a lunch meeting this month since it's pretty much consider Xmas the entire month for some people. We'll start the meetings up again for January. Also, I'll see about picking a date for a social hour. I think we're due for one.

Happy holidays.

Upcoming Events

Hi all,

Sorry we missed those who didn't make it to the Swiss last Tues. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. There are a few things I want to over that was discussed at the meeting.

- Cheryl will be mentioning our group and the grant we just got at the upcoming AIA newsletter. I will be using some pictures I've taken so far (they're on this website) for this newsletter and other media publications. So if anybody who does not want their pictures shown in the paper, please let me know.

- Jon Denton has been working on setting up some exciting architectural tours with the AIA continuing education committee. It'll be for AIA LU or IDP units, whichever ones you'd need. Jon will let us know as soon as tentative dates are set as well as location (Seattle or Tacoma). If you have any tours ideas or places you'd like to visit, please let Jon know.

- Dion Serra, a recent addition to our group, has agreed to take on the 'high school mentorship' activity. He'll be working with local high schools on starting up a mentorship curriculum between high school students and our group. If anybody would like to help Dion or have any ideas, contact him.

- It's been awhile since we had our social event, since Habitat for Humanity. I'd like to start one up again sometime soon. I know we had s couple of new addition to our groups since we started. So, with that said, keep a look out for new events. If anyone has ideas on what they want to have as our next social event, post it on here. I was thinking maybe happy hour?

I know this is a long post, but one last thing. If you want to start a discussion, say anything, complain about anything, post it on here. This google site was created so we could have an open communications between us. So....talk it up.

Good News

I want to spread some good news with everyone. Our Emerging Leaders Group has been awarded a grant from the College of Fellows. It is the 2007 Emerging Professional Component Grant. This will be our funding for study materials and other items.

I will keep everyone updated as things get moving.

November Lunch Meeting

Hi all,

We have an upcoming monthly lunch next tuesday Nov 20th at noon. I was thinking of starting back again at the Swiss for this lunch. You definitely don't want to miss this lunch meeting. We have a lot of stuff to go over. Now that we don't have summer distractions, I think it's about time we start up the study groups. Also, we'll talk about the partnership with the continuing education committee for upcoming lectures and events.

So don't forget, Tuesday, Nov. 20th @ Noon.

See you there!!! Bring a friend or two.

Lunch @ Pita Pit

Hi all,

Don't forget our Oct lunch today!!
It's nice outside so if we don't have seats, we could eat outside

October Meeting

Hi all,

I didn't realize this but our monthly lunch meeting is coming up and would be next Tues. I'm going to puch it back for this month and have the lunch on the 23rd. This way people have some time to recover from the AWESOME tour last night. Anyway, the October lunch will be on Tues, Oct 23rd at noon. There's a couple choices that I was thinking of for this lunch.

1. We grab something from Pita Pit. If they have enough seats for everyone then we stay there. If not, we could bring it to a plaza and have our lunch outside. (Also depend on the weather too)

2. Or we go to Paddy Coyne's Irish Pub. http://www.paddycoynes.net/

They're only a block from each other I think so it's not hard to switch it up at the last minute.

Weyerhauser Tour

It seems that our group has been quiet the last couple months. We didn't have any intern related discussion or questions at the last lunch meeting. However, we did have a good discussion on the ongoing projects in Tacoma and the potential development paths this city is heading toward. We are going to try and start up the study session again possibly in Nov.

I have an update on the upcoming tour for the month of October. Please mark your calendar for Tues, October 9th. The tour will be from 6-8pm which include a tour of the facility and some products presentation. This event will be sponsored by the associates. If you're not familiar with the company, here's the website. http://www.weyerhaeuser.com/

With that said, I'd like to have a little friendly competition among us. We are in need of a graphic poster advertising the event. If anyone would like to showcase their graphic skills, here's your chance. 11x17 or 8.5x11 is fine. There's not much time left so let's make this due Mon, Oct 1st. That should give you plenty of time, with the weekend, to think on it. FYI, the judges will be the architects from AIA continuing education.

Thanks!!!

Konichiwa

Hi Everyone!!

So far we've had American and Mexican food, I'd like to try Japanese food this time. There's a sushi place across the street from the Tacoma Art Museum that looks really good. Let's meet there for our monthly lunch at Twokoi restaurant. If you don't like sushi, they have a variety of noodles and rice dishes. Here's their website, check it out. (http://twokoi.com/)

Don't forget!!! Tues, Sept 18th @ noon.

See you there.

Next Meeting

Hi all,

I am running out of places for us to meet at our regular lunch meeting. If you have a place you'd like to try out, let me know. If not, we could always go back to the usual spots. Our next meeting is Tues, Sept 18th @ noon. Don't forget.

As for the architecture tours. I believe Jon Denton is the organizer???

There's another event coming up that I think is very exciting. I am trying to coordinate a tour to the Weyerhauser building in Federal Way, WA. This is one of SOM's major design that has won a lot of awards.

It will possibly be an after-work event with a tour of the building, presentations on their green products and a reception. Let me know if anyone is interested. We might likely combine our group with the AIA continuing education people.

I will keep everyone posted.

Habitat for Humanity

Hi Everyone!!!

I know this is short notice but I'm doing Habitat again this Saturday if anyone would like to join me. The house that I worked on last week had finished exterior and interior framing but they still had the roof trusses that needs to be frame and sheath as well.

Again, those that volunteered last time does not need any additional papers. First timers, however, do need them.

Lunch at Harmon

Hi Everyone,

We met at the Harmon today for lunch. Not many attended. We talked about having ARE study sessions and IDP. I think its safe to say that we're all at different stages in the processes. It was decided that the next ARE session should be at the AIA office or somewhere relatively quiet with the possiblility of going out for some cocktails afterwards. Jon Denton is going to look into organizing a themed architectural tour of Tacoma that would be opened up to all AIA members.

Please use the Google group as a communication tool. If you have questions about IDP or anything, post it to the group and anyone can respond. Same goes for any ideas you may have for the group.

Thank you,
Kellie Kaiser

Happy Hour @ El Toro!!!

Hola!!!

Don't forget our Happy Hour event tomorrow at 5:30pm at El Toro!!! We'll have a game of trivial pursuit and pictionary with the ArchiFlash cards. The questions won't be in Spanish...we'll save that for next time. For those who haven't taken the test, this will be a good test run to see if you know some of the stuff already. For those who had taken the test, you can be the referee, game host or join the team.

So join us for some nachos and margaritas. Bring a friend or two. http://www.eltorofamily.com/

See you there!!

AIA Golf Tournament

Hi Everyone!!!

I don't know if you guys got an email from AIA SWW about the golf tournament coming up September 7th at the Classic Golf Club in Spanaway.

I was told that there would be discount for the associates. Would anybody be interested in being on the team. We have to have at least four to make a team and get discount on this. Let me know if you'd like to play. The price include 18 holes of golf, prizes and BBQ dinner.

On the other hand, if you can't afford to play then you can still be there for the fun event as a volunteer. they need help filling the bags and during registration before the tournament begins.

Thanks!!

IDP

Since we had a lot of questions during lunch about the IDP process. I'd like to start a discussion here about it. This is what I got on the NCARB website about the actions from the exam board letting interns taking the exams during IDP process.

"There are currently 9 jurisdictions which allow you to take the ARE
prior to the completion of IDP. They are: Alabama, Arizona,
California, Florida, Kentucky, Puerto Rico, Texas, Vermont, and
Wisconsin. The individual laws and requirements for eligibility to sit
for the ARE prior to completion of IDP vary greatly. You must contact
your Board of Architecture to understand their specific requirements."

I want to clarify something about signature requires. The daily supervisor is a registered architect to sign your forms. It doesn't say that it necessarily have to be a principal of the firm. Also, the daily supervisor can also be a mentor. So you can have one person sign both places.

Lunch @ the Swiss

Hi everyone! Don't forget our monthly lunch meeting tomorrow at the Swiss @ noon. See you there!! Ha
