MLK EIS & sub-area plan - Final Open House - December 5th

The final open house for the MLK Subarea Plan is scheduled for December 5th 2012 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at The Evergreen State College Tacoma Campus’s Lyceum Hall, room 105.

The City of Tacoma has been working with residents, businesses and property owners to prepare a Subarea Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Martin Luther King Jr. Neighborhood ("MLK").  The completed Plan and EIS are intended to encourage development and economic revitalization in the MLK District on Tacoma's Hilltop.  Over the past year the City has held open houses for community involvement in the process of establishing a vision for future public and private investments in the MLK District.

Can't make the meeting? your can still provide input through the online survey located at the City of Tacoma's website - http://www.cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?hid=15998
They are looking for hte opinions of persons
who work in MLK and who would be interested in living in MLK – particularly in the catalytic mixed use structures this plan will develop within the next couple of years.  Depending on the results of this survey, and the characteristics of the catalytic sites and developers, potential MLK mixed use housing developments could look like the examples - Denny Park Apartments and Pontedera Condominiums in Seattle. Both projects are mixed use buildings with ground floor or street level retail and housing units over parking decks and both are also sustainably designed with low maintenance materials, natural lighting, energy efficient appliances, and rain/stormwater retention and reuse. Info on these example developments can be found at the above website as well as other additional information.

Artists Invited to Create Welcome Gateway to Downtown Tacoma

 http://www.tacomadailyindex.com/blog/artists-invited-to-create-welcome-gateway-to-downtown-tacoma/2173277/
The City of Tacoma invites artists and/or artist teams living in the United States to respond to a Request for Qualifications for a $185,000 Sound Transit Public Art Program (STart) commission by midnight, Pacific Standard Time, on Mon., Dec. 17, 2012. The selected artist or artist team will create gateway artwork for the south entry to downtown Tacoma at Pacific Avenue and South 26th Street. STart is collaborating with the City’s Arts Program staff in managing this project.
“This gateway artwork that Sound Transit is commissioning is part of a larger capital project that has reshaped the south end of downtown Tacoma,” said Tacoma Arts Administrator Amy McBride. “When Sound Transit extended its Seattle-Tacoma Sounder commuter rail line from the Dome District to South Tacoma and Lakewood, a new entry to the southern edge of our museum-rich downtown area was created.”
This new entry is framed by the Pacific Bridge overpass and a landscaped berm that elevates the rail line. Artwork welcoming people to downtown Tacoma is anticipated to be on either side of the berm areas flanking Pacific Avenue. If the selected artist or artist team proposes additional sites for consideration, they would work with Sound Transit to determine where the artwork would best be situated.
For a complete prospectus, visit tacomaculture.org/arts/opportunities.asp or soundtransit.org/start.

Space.City would like to announce its upcoming Fall Lecture Series, “Un Limited Means.” The series is a play on words which superimposes our own preconceptions that architects working under unique or difficult circumstances, have limited means to create architecture, with the possibility that these very same conditions might actually provide for liberating design conditions. The series will provide a unique view into firms focusing on the roles that local construction techniques, politics, finances, the environment, and social issues play in the creation of their architectural works.

Alejandro Echeverri is an internationally acclaimed architect and planner from Medellín, Colombia, Colombia and Director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Studies at EAFIT University. In addition, as the City’s Director of Urban Projects, Echeverri has played crucial role in the rejuvenation of Medellín. With the support and partnership of the city’s mayor, Sergio Fajardo, Echeverri established public works programs and initiated building a series of visually striking libraries, schools, parks, and community centers in Medellín’s most impoverished areas. The works program even included an elevated gondola that connects some of Medellín’s poorest and most isolated neighborhoods to the rest of the city. Because of these efforts and the his belief in the power of design, Medellín’s crime rate has dropped significantly. Medellín is now considered a blueprint for the future of other cities in the developing world.

MetroParks Tacoma Budget Open House Tonight

Thursday, September 27
6pm
Metro Parks Headquarters, Board Room
4702 S. 19th St.

This is an opportunity to learn about Metro Parks Tacoma's program and services budget development process, prior to the Executive Director's presentation of his recommended budget to the Board of Commissioners in October.

Open House attendees will learn how the District's Strategic Plan and ongoing community engagement process help guide decisions about funding. Our ongoing outreach processes, community and user surveys, Neighborhood Councils, and Board Appointed Citizen Advisory Councils are all avenues for citizens to help shape the Metro Parks' system of park and recreation services which you'll learn more about during the Budget Open House.

While proactive fiscal management and voter support for a levy lid-lift two years ago have helped the district maintain a healthy mix of services and programs, there are offsetting factors outside of the district's control which directly impact budget capacity.
  1. Declining property tax assessments translate to a direct reduction in operating revenues that support the district's core programs and services.
  2. Increased cost of insurance coverage for protection of our park system assets and for healthcare coverages influence overall capacity.
  3. Unknowns as to the level of investment that will continue to be made in park and recreation programs and services, which have historically received support under contract or through grants from the City of Tacoma.
October 29th @ 6PM  is your chance to participate in the process. They will be holding a Public Meeting at the Metro Parks Headquarters board room for citizens to provide formal comment to the Metro Parks board regarding the recommended budget. This is the first of two Public Hearings. The second is scheduled for November 26th same time same place.
Optional opportunities for input:
If you are unable to attend either of the Public Hearings, and would like to provide input to the Board prior to adoption of the budget, comments may be sent via email.

Energy Code Changes

Energy Code Changes

On 7/1/13 WA State will adopt a totally new Energy Code based on IGCC.  The old WA State Energy Code will be consigned to the dumpster for projects permitted after 7/1/13.  New WA Energy Code is currently in the process of being written, with hearings taking place in Olympia over the next few months. For those of you doing work in Seattle, the new Seattle Energy Code goes into effect 9/1/13 -- also based on the IGCC, but more stringent than the WA State Energy Code. Some things will be more stringent, some more lenient in the new code.

Keeping in mind that these are works in process that will change, you can view the new energy code DRAFTS here:

Architecture student debt relief - tell congress to act

The AIA has been actively working to advance policies that help architecture graduates with their student loan debt, and now we need your help.
Although we are pleased that Congress and the White House recently agreed to extending lower student loan interest rates until July 2013, architecture graduates still face huge debts when they graduate. Policymakers need to do more to secure opportunities for millions of architecture graduates to continue pursuing educational opportunities while alleviating a hefty financial burden.
That’s why the AIA and the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) have called on Congress to craft legislation that will afford architecture students the same kind of student loan relief and pro bono assistance that have been offered to students of numerous other professions. This mutually beneficial aid will encourage architecture students to play an important part in community development and will keep recent graduates in the profession.
But in order to get Congress to act, we need you to engage your elected representatives. Please go to our action center by clicking below and send a message to Congress supporting student debt relief for architecture students today:

2012 YAF/COD Ideas Competition - deadline August 31, 2012

Active Lifestyles for Better Health

The AIA Young Architects Forum (YAF) and the AIA Committee on Design (COD) invites architects, interns, students, and allied design professionals (planners, landscape architects, contractors, interior designers, engineers, product representatives) to submit sketches to the international 2012 YAF/COD Ideas Competition.

In this unique design competition, submitters are asked to explore innovative design proposals for educating and encouraging Americans to live a healthier life. Obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic depression, and certain cancers are the biggest public health epidemics of our time. Physical inactivity and unhealthy diets are responsible for more premature deaths than anything except tobacco use.

Today, the design and construction industry has a chance to be a part of the solution which combats our physically inactive and unhealthy lifestyles, similar to how architects and urban reformers in the 19th and early 20th century helped defeat infectious diseases like cholera and tuberculosis. Only instead of inventing life-safety codes, mandating adequate ventilation, or providing for sanitary drinking water; we can begin to retrofit our cities and communities as environments which promote active and healthier lifestyles.

A growing body of research suggests that strategic architectural and urban design interventions may help to promote healthy living by prompting physical activity. In response to that commendable goal, the objective of this design competition is to create such an intervention within the urban environment; an intervention that serves to engage people in a form of physical activity that ultimately benefits their health and wellbeing. Aside from this overarching design objective, competition participants are encouraged to look for solutions that create a visually stimulating, informative, and enjoyable experience for the general public, with the possibility of special emphasis toward capturing the attention of children.

The Young Architects Forum (YAF) is the voice of architects in the early stages of their career and the catalyst for change within the profession and our communities. Working closely with the AIA College of Fellows (COF), the YAF is leading the future of the profession with a focus on architects licensed less than 10 years. The national YAF AdCom is charged with encouraging the development of national and regional programs of interest to young architects and supporting the creation of YAF groups within local chapters. YAF programs, activities, and resources serve young architects by providing information and leadership; promoting excellence through fellowship with other professionals; and encouraging mentoring to enhance individual, community, and professional development.
