D-M Light Rail Construction Site - Temporary Art Installation

*Volunteers Needed!*

The "TRANS" art installation creates a temporary landscape that explores the sites TRANSitions to sustainability. The artwork includes a series of vegetated, pixelated roof forms that create a living, illuminate billboard, a smaller prairie grass green roof that evokes former habitat on the site, and a set of bold graphic banners that connects the installation to the street level.
5.jpeg

We need your help! We have two installation days, and are looking for extra hands to help our artist team bring this work to life!

Sunday November 27
On Day 1, we'll be setting over 1,300 potted plants into our wire frames to create the green roof composition. We'll also be attaching the construction lights to the underside of the wire frames and planting the prairie grasses into the green roof modules. We could use 2-4 people to help with these tasks - many hands make light work! We'll plan for two shifts: 10-12:30 and 1:30-4:00. Join us for one or both.

Monday November 28th
On Day 2, we'll mainly be moving the 10' long, planted forms into place on the ground for the forklift to take over. We'll also be hanging two 36 foot long banners on the adjacent fences. We could use 1-2 people who are comfortable lifting up to 50 pounds. Time: 9am to noon.

If interested in helping create the TRANS installation for the Dome District in Tacoma, please contact Teresa at tburrelsman@gmail.com.

Is the emergency moratorium needed for Large Scale Retail?

Is the emergency moratorium needed for Large Scale Retail?
Let the Planning Commission know what you think October 5th

On October 5, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. the Planning Commission will be holding a public hearing regarding the current moratorium on large scale retail establishments adopted by the City Council. The hearing will be held in the City Council Chambers on the 1st Floor of the Tacoma Municipal Building (747 Market Street). Please see the attached public notice.

At the City Council meeting on August 30, 2011, Ordinance No. 28014 was adopted, which put in place an emergency moratorium on the permitting of large scale retail establishments (those with a floor area greater than 65,000 square feet). The moratorium applies Citywide and was enacted for a duration of six months (until February 28, 2012). As stated in the ordinance, the purpose of the moratorium is to allow the City time to evaluate the impacts of these kinds of uses and consider potential changes to the applicable regulations and requirements.

As required, the moratorium has been referred to the Planning Commission to develop findings and recommendations for submittal to the City Council regarding the emergency moratorium. The Planning Commission is seeking public comment to assist them in formulating those findings and recommendations, particularly related to:

· Is the emergency moratorium needed?

· If so, what is the appropriate duration of the moratorium?

You are invited to come and testify at the hearing or provide written comments using the return address below no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, October 7, 2011, or by facsimile at (253) 591-2002 or via e-mail at planning@cityoftacoma.org.

New Goddess of Commerce ceremony unveiling

Ceremony unveiling of the New Goddess of Commerce statue
August 31st at 4pm
616 Saint Helens Avenue, Tacoma, WA

Sculpture by Marilyn Mahoney

Project Funded and Endorsed by:
The Theater District Association, the Tacoma Historical Society, the Port of Tacoma , and other generous donors.

Project Organizer & Chairperson:
Griselda “Babe” Lehrer and the Theater District Association

Several years ago Seong Shin, interior architect at McGranahan Architects, thought it would be a good idea if the various HOAs formed a group to promote our neighborhood, the Theater District of Tacoma. It grew to become more than the original vision under Blaine Johnson’s leadership. Seong envisioned an Urban Garage Sale which the organization had in the summer of 2009 at the Roberson. The money for that function, in addition to what Blaine gathered from many other sources, paid for the tile mural at Ben Gilbert Park just north of the municipal buildings.

The Theater District Association then turned its attention toward the intersection at St Helens , 6th and Baker. In a continuing effort to remove the blight from this intersection the association, joined through Fred King and Blaine Johnson, with Babe Lehrer and Marilyn Mahoney who needed a place to install the new Goddess of Commerce, who’s inception is described below. The ownership of the property where the Mandarin Antiques store is graciously agreed to provide a space for the statue.

The Goddess of Commerce Story

In 1885, the original Goddess of Commerce statue was placed on top of the new 3 story Chamber of Commerce building at 12th and Pacific in downtown Tacoma . The 7-foot copper statue, designed by C. Augustus Darmer exhibited symbols of commerce for that time in 1950 when the building came down, so did the statue. History tells us that it was melted down.

Today's Goddess of Commerce statue, has symbols depicting Tacoma's current industries. Today's port and shipping are represented by the crane earrings she wears as well as the container ship that she holds in her left hand. The fishing industry is represented on her back. Art, architecture, and the construction of spaces for modern commerce are represented by the familiar facades of buildings such as the Tacoma Glass Museum, Tacoma Dome & Old City Hall, resting in her right hand.

Tacoma Digital Billboard & Sign Ordinance Public Hearing

Tomorrow - July 19th @5pm
City Hall Council Chambers (747 Market St)

Let the council know what you think

If this issues is of concern to you go to the meeting or contact your city council members with your opinion http://www.cityoftacoma.org/Page.aspx?nid=54 this seems to be the last public comment opportunity for this issue.

what is the Tacoma Billboard Regulation issue?
1997 - the City of Tacoma passed an ordinance banning billboards except in limited locations and removal of selective existing billboards.

2007 - The owner of many of the city's billboards Clear Channel Outdoor, Inc. sued the city claiming their rights to free speech were violated.

2010 - City Council agreed to a settlement with Clear Channel that allowed more than 30 new digital billboards to be built in exchange for removing more than 200 existing billboards and relinquishing the permits for more than 100 other billboards.

March 2011 - The Planning Commission received overwhelming input from Tacoma residents opposing the agreement and urged the city to stand by its original billboard ordinance.

May 2011 - the city council put
in place an emergency moratorium that stops the acceptance of applications to install or construct new billboards or to alter, modify or replace existing billboards anywhere in the City for 180 days to allow for further review and consider changes to its billboard regulations.

Imagine the possibilities with the South Tacoma Business District

Architects needed for August 6th workshop

Historic Tacoma is nearing the end of a study with the South Tacoma Business District to focus on their historic character and image-identity enhancing options available. On August 6th, they are looking at conducting a half-day visioning workshop based on their historical foundation work to help the District imagine the possibilities of their built environment. They are looking for architectural firms, individual architects and associate architects willing to sit with members of the District for a few hours (9-12) on a Saturday to brainstorm possibilities as well as architects who would be interested in preparing a few quick sketches (from a list of specific buildings) prior to the workshop showing how a facade could be transformed back to its original character. The goal is for the property/business owners of historic structures to understand that it is possible to bring these structures back even after decades of inappropriate design renovations in order to receive facade grants and in some cases perhaps special tax valuations. There are no 'hard' goals from the exercise, except to help them begin to make more tangible their new sense of themselves. There will be no on-going commitment and might be good exposure for future work. Some interest in performing upgrades has been expressed by some in the group.

WA Trust's Most Endangered Properties List

Announcement 11am May 24

Fireman's Park at S. 7th & Pacific Ave in downtown Tacoma

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation is pleased to host a press event on Tuesday, May 24th at 11:00 a.m. to announce its annual list of the state's Most Endangered Historic Properties. The event, open to the public, will be held at Fireman's Park, located at the intersection of S. 7th Street and Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma. (Editor's note: it is safe to say that at least one Tacoma property will be named to the list.)

Since initiating its Most Endangered Historic Properties List in 1992, the Washington Trust has identified over 100 historically significant resources experiencing a wide range of pressures. Inclusion in our annual list is intended to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing historic resources across the state and to encourage collaboration with all stakeholders to develop preservation strategies. In numerous instances, Most Endangered status has worked to facilitate solutions that promote the historic significance of sites while retaining important resources as viable, functional components of our neighborhoods and communities. In 2009, the Murray Morgan Bridge was named to the List. Five historic resources are highlighted in the 2011 List.

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization, promotes the preservation of historic places in Washington State through advocacy, education, collaboration, and stewardship. Founded in 1976, the Washington Trust addresses its mission through the annual Most Endangered Historic Properties List, educational tours of its landmark headquarters, the Stimson-Green Mansion in Seattle, conferences and training workshops, a quarterly members' newsletter, a small grants fund, and action on legislation and public policy. Visit the Trust website at www.preservewa.org for more information.

Emerging Leaders improving lives

The Emerging Leaders Group (ELG) and the Emerging Green Builders (EGB) teamed up to sponsor a house on National Rebuilding Day Saturday April 30th. Through two fundraising events in February and some generous donations, the ELG was able to raise the money necessary to sponsor a house. We were grateful that Jim Newman from Rushforth Construction was kind enough to once again be our house captain.

Our homeowner this year was LaVerna, a 69-year-old widow who has lived in the house for more than 30 years. She grew up in the neighborhood only a few houses away. Currently, LaVerna has mobility issues due to a number of knee surgeries and takes care of her adult granddaughter who also lives in the house. Her granddaughter is in a wheelchair while going through chemotherapy.

The scope of the project was to remove an existing, deteriorating ramp and to build a new one in it’s place, replace some rotting decking on her adjacent patio, stabilize the handrail at the front porch and possibly assist with some yard work. As we were demolishing the ramp and removing the rotting wood, it became apparent that there was more work required than anticipated. As the ramp was being taken apart, the adjacent structure covering part of her patio began to collapse. We quickly installed temporary supports to stabilize the structure. Once a few of the decking members were removed it revealed that the supports below were extremely rotted making the decking unsafe and therefore required replacement .

The dedicated team of volunteers stepped up and did what was necessary to complete the project. We were at the home Saturday until 7pm then a small team went back Sunday for a few hours to finish the job. At the end of the weekend, LaVerna had a new safe ramp, half the patio was rebuilt, the handrails at the front porch were secured and her flowerbeds were weeded.

LaVerna was overjoyed and extremely thankful for the new ramp. Now she does not have to worry about the decking giving way as she pushes her granddaughter’s wheelchair up the ramp and that the handrails at the front porch will support her when she needs them.
